What is The Autism Support Group?
This is a support group (I know it says it in the name but I feel like it bares repeating it as it is IMPORTANT) for autistic individuals. The support group are run by
and they are low cost so it is accessible for everyone! It is a space where we autistic individuals can be ourselves, where we can share the things that make us, us and have other people to relate with.
It is a space intended to make us feel less alone and more supported in this world that is ALWAYS fitted for neurotypical people.
What has been my experience attending these support sessions?
As a AuDHD individual, I live in a VERY neurotypical environment, where everyone around me is always different than myself. Their struggles are different and when I try to explain what I am experiencing, everyone cannot make sense of it. My loved ones are always sympathetic and loving; however, sometimes you just need empathy as opposed to sympathy.
What is the difference between the both?
Empathy is the ability to understand another person’s feelings, experience, etc. meanwhile Sympathy is defined as the feeling of being sorry for somebody; showing that you understand and care about somebody’s problems
The Autism Support Group Sessions aims to introduce empathy into the lives of autistic individuals. It aims to provide a place for us to talk about our hyper-fixation, to discuss how we mask and how exhausting it all is. It aims to shine a light on how this is a SHARED experience amongst individuals who are autistic.
It aims to basically make us aware that we are not alone and that, while we cannot find other autistic individuals in life easily, these sessions are meant to bring us closer to those who are like us and share similar experiences as we do.
Every time I have attended Chelsea’s sessions, I leave feeling relieved, supported and a bit like some weight has been taken off my shoulder.
Why should you attend these sessions?
These sessions are meant to make us feel less alone and share our experiences. In an ideal world, as Chelsea mentions in her social media, we would be receiving these group sessions as part of our support from the medical field. However, this is far from what the world looks like today, even in the UK, where most of us are located.
We all deserve to find others who are like us, to feel the sense of belonging somewhere and
